Perfect Imperfection/ S.D.U. Ability Ball:

2/28/13:

I had the honor of speaking at two events held in conjunction with each other at UC Riverside. The first event “Perfect Imperfection”, was about body imagery, building confidence, and the art of self respect. The second event was the 2nd annual SDU Ability Ball which was hosted by the Student Disability Union, whose theme was overcoming disabilities and adversities. At both Events I was able to touch on and draw experiences from how the stigmas, stereotypes, and imagery placed over me as a young Latino male made it difficult to see myself as anything else but the limited and criminalized identity that was put over my body growing up. Despite always being an A student, an athlete, and being involved in the community; my ability to move, function and excel always seemed to be limited or slowed down by not only the environment I came of age in, but by the pre-conceived notions people placed over me based on how I looked. Bodybuilding for me was a way of escaping depending on others for help and provided me with a way to build myself into something greater then the pre-determined identity that my environment had deemed to place over me. I ended the night with the philosophy I developed and learned over my journey and transition from where I began to where I am now by saying “Don’t be cocky, be CONFIDENT, and don’t be self conscious, but rather conscious of self.” SPECIAL SHOUT-OUT: to SDU and all its members, and especially the 2012 Student body President of the Year and my good friend Terrance Stewart!

Tia Chucha’s Centro Cultural

WORKSHOP: Revolutionary Revolution with Brian Molina

June 9th 2012

This was part 4 of a workshop series in collaboration with a San Fernando based Youth group called Young Warriors. Tia Chucha’s is the only Latino Book store and cultural center in the entire valley and has grown to be recognized world wide much in part thanks to the work of prolific Chicano author Luis J. Rodriguez. I was very fortunate to be able to get in contact with Mayra YW Zaragoza, the founder of the Young Warriors program and teach a workshop on the importance of learning how to empower oneself. This workshop was directed towards an audience of leaders already active in the community, and focused specifically on why it is important for leaders to live and portray a healthy, empowering image in order to empower the rest of the community. In the Latino community, many times the only time we see another person who looks like us in a position of power, with glamor and status, is when they are Gangbanging or drug dealing. Part of the Yungmuscle philosophy focuses on IDENTITY, and more specifically building a new or alternative identity for the next generation that can yield power and be healthy at the same time. We were all blessed and honored to be in the presence of Luis J. Rodriguez who was in attendance! Gracias to everyone and all the special guests who supported this workshop!

Yungmuscle and Pocho1 Collaboration:

Chicano Photoshoot

December 14th 2011

This was a Photoshoot done to promote unity and partnership between two YUNG Chicano/Latino entrepeneurs by putting our skills together to create something beautiful. Pocho1 is an amazing photographer and activist from the Bay Area who captures the struggle of the Latino Community through a lense which he calls to “Doc the Block”. Many times in our community our people are socialized to divide and pull each other down instead of uniting for a common purpose which is why we have been labeled as “crabs in a bucket”. This photoshoot occurred against all odds as Pocho1 and I actually grew up in neighboring rival gang communities in Northern CA, but now on the other side of that reality we came together to promote unification, cooperation and entrepreneurialism amongst our people. We wanted to portray the Chicano/Latino Image in versatile looks with mainstream appeal, but at the same time staying true to our roots and culture.  Please hit up Pocho1 for any visual services from photography to video: http://www.pocho1.com/

The Team Chicana Photoshoot:

September 10th 2011

The First major event for Yungmuscle.com was the “Team Chicana Photoshoot”. I wanted to have a professional photoshoot completely organized, executed and created by YUNG aspiring Chican@/Latin@ models and business experts. The focus of the shoot was to portray the Chican@/Latin@ image and culture as something strong, beautiful, and to be respected. The way that many Latinos are portrayed in the media as either violent and dangerous criminals, or sexualized exotic objects, is extremely damaging to the way others view us, and to the way we have come to view ourselves. I wanted to portray the struggle, the beauty, the culture and the hope for my people, by my people, in a healthy and uplifting way. Much love to the hermosa Chican@’s who came out and killed it with me! If you are a YUNG LADY in the BAY AREA be sure to get involved with with my GIRL SASA’S scholarship programs at one of these locations: http://www.missmarincounty.org/ http://www.missnapa.org/ http://www.misssolano.org/ and to professionally book my the beautiful Dora Zapien for Photoshoots/events please contact her via Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dora.zapien.
